Do you have to clean out your home, paint it and stage it before you can sell it?
The answer: No!
Tamera and John called me wanting to help their mother, Jane sell her Mussey Street home. I had admired this Victorian property for over 30 years for what it could be! It reminded me of George and Mary Bailey’s home in the movie “It’s A Wonderful Life”.

The problem was, after 43 years of living there, the house was full of stuff they had amassed and there was a lot of deferred maintenance inside and out. They were exhausted trying clean it out and were overwhelmed by the list of repairs they thought needed to be done and the potential cost.
After having a chance to walk through the house, I loved it! There was a lot to look past, but I could see the good bones. I could see the gorgeous hardwood floors, beautiful moldings and staircase and so much more. It had a warmth, and I knew it could be brought back to life.
I suggested that they list the house in “as is” condition which meant no more packing, no painting, no cleaning, and no repairs. They could remove the personal property they wanted to keep but leave everything else for the buyers to clean out and also leave the updating, repairs and renovations to the new owner. I could see a giant weight coming off their shoulders – they were all so relieved. This was definitely the right strategy for them!
We put the home on the market, had a busy open house and receive multiple offers. We just closed on the house and the new owners are so excited about the renovation project. I can’t wait to see this house brought back to its original glory- It’s a Wonderful Life!
